Why Butter Paper Is So Important in the Food Industry

In today’s fast-moving food industry, hygiene, safety, and presentation matter as much as taste. That’s where butter paper comes in — a simple yet essential material used in bakeries, restaurants, and food packaging businesses worldwide.
At R.K. Enterprise, India’s oldest butter paper manufacturer since 1993, we understand why this humble sheet of paper plays such an important role in food packaging and handling.

Authorities ban on wrapping of food items in newspapers

  • Health risks: Newspaper ink can leach harmful chemicals like lead, heavy metals, and other toxic substances into the food, posing a severe threat to public health.
  • Hygiene concerns: Newspapers are often stored in unhygienic conditions, which can lead to the contamination of food with harmful microorganisms.
  • FSSAI regulations: The ban is mandated under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018.
  • Enforcement: FSSAI has urged all food businesses to immediately discontinue this practice and switch to safe, approved food-grade packaging materials.
The use of newspapers for food wrapping is prohibited in India, as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned it. This ban is in effect because newspaper ink contains chemicals like lead and other heavy metals that can leach into food, causing health issues like organ damage and increasing the risk of cancer.
